Hello, and welcome to my site!

I’m Andrew McDonald, a freshman studying Computer Science and Advanced Mathematics at Michigan State University.

Seeking to broaden the scope of my learning and develop cross-disciplinarily during my time on campus, I’ve decided to enroll in “Doing Digital History” for the spring 2019 semester to explore the history of slavery and Reconstruction in the United States as viewed through a 21st-century lens. Over the course of the next 15 weeks, I’ll be posting analyses and visualizations of various historical datasets to reveal hidden insights, leverage new arguments, and bolster or refute existing notions in the historical literature of slavery and Reconstruction. I’ll employ today’s technological tools to tell new stories about the past, and examine trends, correlations, patterns, and outliers to draw conclusions which might otherwise be invisible to the naked eye.

Most importantly, over the course of the next 15 weeks, I’ll be learning how to learn from data.

I hope you choose to join me on my journey, and hope you enjoy my work.
